"The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows." -Sydney J. Harris
Whole group instruction does not mesh well with 27 kindergarten students confined to one classroom. My diverse group of students would benefit from materials for literacy groups because these materials would allow self-exploration and group exploration.
My school is a Title I school in Oklahoma City.
I have 27 students in my classroom and a part time teacher assistant. My students primarily come from high poverty homes. School is an escape for some of them.
I believe that providing students with the opportunity to learn in cooperative groups would greatly enrich the remainder of their lives. Cooperative learning groups will prepare them to be successful members of their communities when they grow up. My students lack the attention span to be able to concentrate during whole group lessons. In order for my lessons to be beneficial to my students, I believe that cooperative learning groups are necessary.
My Project
I am a firm believer that cooperative learning groups are a crucial component to help students become college and/or career ready. In using cooperative learning groups, I can ensure that all students are allowed an equal education, despite any differences.
Teaching phonics and literacy lessons are difficult in a classroom of 27 five-year-old children. I firmly believe that cooperative learning groups will be highly beneficial to my students for many reasons. They will be able to explore and learn new tasks at their own pace, while being held accountable for their own learning. Learning groups will also help to increase student participation and their depth of knowledge of new materials.
My students need counting boxes for math stations and word practice cards, sight word puzzles and linking letter monkeys for literacy groups. These materials will have many positive uses within my classroom.
Kindergarten is a vital stage in a person's life.
The concepts that my students learn in kindergarten are the stepping stones to everything that they will learn in the future. I believe that even though I have an overpopulated classroom with minimal teaching resources, these materials will allow my students the fair chance that they deserve at becoming self-sustaining individuals in the community.
