Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in a self contained life skills classroom in a Title 1 district in Texas.

They are lively children that happen to have disabilities including visual impairments, hearing impairments, cognitive disabilities, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and some very serious medical conditions. Due to the severity of their disabilities, they have trouble developing skills at the rate other children their age do. Although this is the case, they do not let that stop them from accomplishing skills. "Disability is a matter of perception." ---- Martina Navratilova

My Project

It is important to me that my students leave me being as independent as they possibly can using the knowledge and skills learn in the classroom. There are many students in my classroom that have disabilities that limit their capabilities, but even with most people think they can "do nothing".....they prove those people wrong! Being able to fend for themselves is a necessity so cooking simple meals and knowing the difference between healthy and unhealthy food is crucial for their livelihoods. Because it is so important, I implement a cooking curriculum in our classroom so they can learn this vital skill!

All donations to this project will help my students to gain independence in preparing food and helping my students contribute to their family and their community.

Training starts in the classroom, so I am trying to provide the best atmosphere for my students as well as making it as meaningful as possible so they can generalize the skills into the "real world."
