Cooking ILS Style

My students need cooking supplies, such as whisks, aluminum foil, and a toaster to help in teaching life skills and creating independence.

I teach in a 7th and 8th grade Integrated Life Skills (ILS) classroom in a low income area, with children with disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Autism, etc.

My students are highly motivated by food. We have done simple cooking lessons with the resources we have, and my students extremely enjoy cooking. Their eyes light up and they want to help in every way possible.

With items such as a toaster oven and a slow cooker, it greatly increases our cooking possibilities. I would love to have my students prepare nutritious afternoon snacks, or holiday feasts for their friends and family. I'm hoping to have my students do a Thanksgiving meal this year. Giving my students these opportunities helps increase their independence, their math skills, and their speech. Not to mention the high self esteem they get from preparing something themselves.
