Cooking Club to Promote Healthy Eating with Silkscreening!

My students need silk screening supplies, canvas totes, and t-shirts to promote healthy eating on campus.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine students getting excited for broccoli? Some students will chase me down just to get a taste of chard. While students love to eat their fruits and vegetables, there are always outside pressures to eat unhealthy. Even in the school cafeteria you'll find unhealthy choices!

These students are an after-school cooking club of 4th-6th graders.

Some of them have cooking experience, while others just want to be healthy. Most of them have experience growing and harvesting food in the school garden. They all turned in applications and really thought about why they want to be a part of a nutrition cooking club. This is the group of students who really shined in their application, demonstrating their passion to cook healthy!

My Project

With these supplies, the students will design t-shirts and canvas bags that they will also silk-screen themselves. We will go over the food marketing (to counter-act the unhealthy marketing ads to create a healthy advertisement), the process of silkscreening, and also mixing colors. They will hand print their designs on their shirts and canvas bags and promote healthy eating all over the school! The best part is that after we use all of the canvas and t-shirt from this project, we can still use the screens and the paint over and over again! I would love to have a silkscreening party where other students who are not in the club could come and bring their own shirt to get printed by my students.

In our county, the obesity rate is close to 30%.

These students are so empowered to make a difference in their school. This project will combine nutrition, marketing, art, and even fashion to promote healthy eating to the school community. This will not just be a one time project, because they can continue to use the supplies all year long!
