Convection Confusion!

My students need a Convection of Liquid Apparatus, a Current Event Convection Kit, and Convection Fluid to help them better understand earth's convection currents.

My Students

Convection. Do you know what it is? Perhaps you do, and you may remember learning it in grade school. It is definitely not the most exciting concept for students, but most certainly a very important discovery topic for all students studying earth systems science to understand.

My students come from a low-income community in Florida.

They are often economically disadvantaged, and thus find it very difficult to visualize earth systems that they may not have had the opportunity to observe in the natural world. Though the ocean is only a few miles away, and Florida's climate lends itself very well to visualizing and understanding natural phenomena, many students have not had quite as much exposure to the natural scientific world that will allow them to become less intimidated by the physical and chemical systems that control so much about the world we live in.

My Project

I am requesting three items that will help my students understand how fluids respond to warmer and cooler temperatures. Many students can grasp how warm fluids rise and cooler fluids sink due to the density gradient, but they are unable to draw from that knowledge how circular patterns are formed by the temperature and density differences.

Your donation to this project will allow me to better teach students about convection in fluids.

From magma, to atmospheric circulation cells, to oceanic surface currents, the understanding of the concept of convection is among one of the most important indicators as to whether a student will become interested in earth science and the stipulations associated with global climate change.
