Connecting Cultures With Cameras

My students need a digital camera to create personal memoirs to share with students in their sister school in Ghana, Africa.

My Students

Photography is the beauty of life, captured. - Tara Chisholm. My students are excited to start sharing their lives through photos and stories with children at their sister school, Bantuma, in Elmina, Ghana. My camera recently broke so we have no way of taking photos to tell their life stories!

I teach students with learning disabilities in a large urban elementary school in California.

My students often struggle with writing. This past year, they have become inspired to write stories for children in Ghana. The students at Bantuma School in Ghana have written stories to share with my students. Now, my students would like to share their lives by creating a deeper relationship with the Ghanaian students. They want to document their lives through pictures and write about their lives so that the children in Ghana can connect with them in a meaningful way.

My Project

With this camera, my students will have the opportunity to share their lives through visual images. They will be making books about their lives. By providing an authentic experience of taking photos to help tell their story, my students will be inspired to improve their writing skills while teaching children in Ghana about life in the US. These stories will be posted on an international book club site. The books will also be sent to the library of their sister school, Bantuma, in Elmina, Ghana.

Having the opportunity to make global connections with children in Africa through self-published books is such a powerful learning experience for my students as well for the children in Ghana.
