My Students

My special needs learners struggle with reading comprehension of print material. Besides, they have very limited exposure to educational technology tools to help boost academic achievement and make learning fun. They need technology tools to help them connect with their peers and the outside world.

My special education students attend an urban, high poverty, and mostly Hispanic public school in California.

Most of them have a specific learning disability and a few are autistic. They have very limited exposure to state-of-the-art technology and very few opportunities to use tech-tools that will re-enforce their motivation and learning styles.

My Project

We share or rotate only 1 apple tablet among 4 eReading schemes or circles. The non-readers are motivated to increase their participation level within the groups. My students are now clamoring for more tablets to facilitate increased access to their choice eBooks. This will allow me to reteach and provide differentiation to aid them. These students are motivated and deserve to learn as much as possible in school.

The goal is to boost academic achievement and make learning fun.

The use of the tablet (novelty) motivates the students who are now very willing to participate in the eReading circles. We use a few apps (DRAGON Dictation, Brain-Pop, Science360, etc.) to enhance the interactive learning process and help the students to continue to improve their reading and writing abilities in accordance with their level of sophistication. We need more tablets to increase each student's reading achievement.
