Hello everyone. I am a NY high school biology teacher. My classes are generally composed of freshman and sophomore students, many of whom, when they first come to me, seem to have lost that childhood curiosity for the world around them that was, at one time, so insatiable!
Science is a hands-on discipline, students learn best when they complete and write about activities or experiments that they conduct themselves!
As we all know, the recent budget crisis has hit schools especially hard and so funding for supplies for lab classes is stressful to say the least - this is especially true for ecology related topics. My very urban students barely see trees as there is very little green space here in NYC and few students live near these areas. We need to bring the environment to our classroom because there is precious little of it outside! That is why we were so excited to get funding through donorschoose to create indoor gardens in some of the science classrooms.
My Project
Which brings me to my current request. We thought why stop with the indoor garden? Why not also have a worm composting station so that we can then create the soil we will use in the future. In this way we can make our new ecosystem completely sustainable.
These Can O Worm composting bins are ideal for large scale production but indoors! They have been used by some of the teachers before and are almost completely odor free, making them ideal for classrooms shared by multiple teachers.
We are working so hard to instill in our students, some of the best and brightest of NYC, a sense of awe for the natural world and desire to protect the natural resources we have left.
What better way to teach about the amazing ability of nature to cycle materials then to have them simulated in your own classroom? What better way is there to stress the importance of sustainability then to demonstrate it in the classroom? All we need to teach these lessons is your help!
