My Students

Remember as a kid, when you had tons questions about a book you were reading? Spend an hour with one of my second graders during Readers Workshop and you'll witness that same curiosity. How better to foster that method of thinking, then to teach with materials that make them want to learn more?

I teach a dynamic group of second graders who love to learn and read.

They are very curious and on most days they have more questions than answers. I want to teach them that questions are good because it shows they are thinking. Readers Workshop is great way to do just that. My school has a high population of English Language Learners. They are highly motivated and eager to learn but many of them lack the resources for a literacy-rich life. Most of them do not live within walking distance of a public library and our school library is smaller than our classroom. These kids need to be immersed in stories and a wide variety of non-fiction. With the world of literature and expository text opened to them, their excitement will saturate the classroom. I believe that one of the best ways of closing the achievement gap is by creating life-long readers that are so inspired by what they read that they want to keep reading beyond our classroom's walls.

My Project

My first goal for Reader's Workshop is for my students to learn how to choose "just-right" books to read by themselves so I can work with small groups on their literacy needs. Using Comprehension Clubs, namely Interactive Read Aloud and Student Book Clubs, I will encourage thinking, talking and writing about reading. The collaborative nature of the "Student Book Club" enables all students - including struggling readers and English Language Learners - to find the support they need. Interactive Read Aloud is a great way to both introduce and reinforce a topic. Comprehension Clubs would provide a full-years worth of curriculum that will allow us to talk, think, and write about text using such themes as; Animals and Animal Watchers, It Happened in School, Like No One Else, Realistic Fiction, Search and Survive and Wishes and Promises. Each unit is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and directly addresses the five key expectations for English/Language Arts.

Having this set, which includes; a Teaching Guide by the renown Fountas & Pinnell, 30 Read Aloud picture books with lesson cards, ten copies each of 24 Book Club titles with lesson cards, 24 Audio Books and six Unit folders, will enhance the learning in our classroom.

These books will help solidify skills being taught in Reader's Workshop by helping tackle new vocabulary and reinforcing reading strategies. I am confident that this set of books will help my students to become lifelong learners.
