Literacy is not a luxury, it is a right and a responsibility. If our world is to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century we must harness the energy and creativity of all our citizens. This quote from President Clinton sums up the challenge facing educators, creating literate citizens.
My students are middle level students living in rural south western Idaho.
They consistently do quite well on standardized tests, but continue to struggle in the area of language. The students I teach never back down from a challenge, they are willing to do the hard work necessary to continue to make academic growth, but they are in need of the right resources.
My Project
The new Common Core State Standards are being rolled out within the next two years. The implementation of these new standards will raise the rigor in the classroom, which should increase academic achievement. I applaud the increase in rigor in my students curriculum, however funding has not been increased to allow the purchase of new materials. Once again teachers will be expected to reach higher standards with sub par supplies. The Scholastic Scope I am requesting will bridge the gap between current standards and the new standards without burdening the school district's strained budget. My students will have access to the high quality, non-fiction material that is so stressed in the Common Core Standards. Students in my class will go from reading, primarily narrative writing, to 70% non fiction within a two year time span, these magazines will ease that transition and help to ensure success.
The long lasting outcome of being a literate person is immeasurable.
With the generous donation of these materials my students will have the best chance possible to maximize achievement in a literacy rich environment.
