Commedia dell'arte - Masks for Acting

My Students

This year is my first year teaching Drama. My goal this year has been to balance learning about the art of acting, theater history, and Shakespearean theater alongside practicing acting techniques such as improvisation, monologues, and skits. My hope is that students will gain a love of theater.

My students are a small group of 19 that are in this drama class as an elective.

They are mostly female with a few male students that are a precious commodity in my opinion. The group is all Ninth through Eleventh grade students that get along well together and are more than willing to work in groups and have learned to feel comfortable performing in front of their peers. Our school is very small and is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are a tight-knit community that supports each other inside and outside of the school building. My drama students are a small representative group of our greater school population of hardworking, kind students.

My Project

As a culminating project for my drama class, I would like to teach my students about Commedia dell'arte which is a 16th century form of Italian masked theater. Having my students create their own masks will help them connect with the skits that they create which will tie together everything that we have learned this year. The Plaster of Paris will be used to create the actual masks so that they fit each student's face individually. This will increase the student's comfort in the masks. Then, the acrylic paints will be used to decorate the masks to fit the type of animal each student wants his/her skit to be about. The hope is that the combination of acting and art will create a cross-curricular project that will keep the students engaged and also help them practice all of the skills from this course.

This project will greatly help my students connect with the dramatic arts at another level.

They will be able to create their costume, write their skit, and perform their piece; they will get to go through an entire production process on a smaller scale. The Commedia dell'arte masks will be a way to make a historical art relevant to them and encourage them to enjoy the theatrical process.
