Comfortable Reading...for Once

We need a comfortable place to sit while reading. Sitting on a cold, uncomfortable chair during reading doesn't make us want to read. We would like beanbags.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Teaching in a Title I school has its ups and downs. Chance, Zion, Ceniya and Nahla requested comfortable seating for independent reading because their chairs are "Cold, uncomfortable and too small for me (Chance)." For some students, comfort at home is not possible. Severe poverty ensures this...

Our students have been working on ideas for a couple of weeks now. They had ideas ranging from a karaoke machine, to snacks for reading time, to fans to cool off (because the temperature reaches 100 in the classroom in September and June). Finally, the students came to an agreement that they would like a comfortable place to read, while taking turns on the beanbags. They created three areas in the classroom that can be their "Reading Centers." One of the kids said, "Maybe we can sit in front of your desk because you're nice." I was touched by this and couldn't wait to get started working on this project.

The majority of our students are below grade level in reading. We would love for them to read at home, but the reality is that they're not reading once they leave school. To ensure they read in class, the students have requested a comfortable place to read. If there is comfort, more students will read. Academically, students will become better readers. Socially, students will sit with a partner to help each other become better readers.

In Their Own Words

I would love my students to become better readers to help them be more prepared for college and their careers. Many of our students don't think college is a possibility. Helping them realize that they are worth the investment will help motivate them to read, and eventually get them onto the proper grade level of reading.

My teacher gave me the power to decide what we want in class. I asked other students what they would be interested in and reported back to the teacher. Other students were glad that I was part of this group in deciding what we will get to make us work harder and be comfortable while working. I asked my teacher if she would allow me to work on other projects with her. I am excited to work with students and my teacher to create new classroom projects.

Since I struggle with reading, I want to get better. I know I could read at my desk, but it is really uncomfortable to read for 40 minutes on a hard chair. It would really nice to be comfortable while reading. Even though we have to share the beanbag chairs, we will get a chance every week to sit on them. I can't wait!
