My Students

Imagine that your reading skills seemed closer to your little sister's than your peers in the fifth grade. Imagine reading being a daily challenge and an overwhelming burden. Imagine if somehow that burden was lifted and reading became enjoyable.

My students come from the inner city of a large metropolitan area.

They are at risk of entering adulthood with very limited reading and processing skills unless someone intervenes. They live in a stark world where violence and disarray are the norm and learning and thinking are unrealistic expectations. But this year things are starting to change at our school and my students are beginning to blossom.

My Project

Learning to read is the fundamental key to encouraging and feeding this blossoming. At the fifth grade level students ought to be able to read to learn from a text rather than to simply be entertained by one. Coming to the task of reading at such a disadvantage as many of my students are, it is important to remove as many obstacles to their learning as possible. One way that I have tried to do this is to create an area in the classroom where reading is relaxing and enjoyable. I have found cushions and an old carpet, a bookshelf, and as many easy readers as I could get a hold of. I have dedicated a half hour every school day to quiet reading time and have put in place incentives to encourage their efforts. What would make this reading area even more inviting and therefore more conducive to the overcoming of my students' reluctance to try to read would be to have a brand new, fresh carpet on which to lay down and relax. To that end I hope to procure one through this wonderful program.

The funding of this project and the delivery to the classroom of a brand new, colorful carpet will excite my students and create in them a desire to be able to use the reading area for its intended purpose.

If we can inspire these kids to read, we can then inspire them to desire to learn as well. Thank you for considering my students!
