My students need a color printer (with extra ink) with a copy function. This is our first year as a maker workshop and the copier is foundational. Thank you.
As a librarian and artist I find my students learn best with hands-on projects. While some love to sit and read, others do not but also might lack the skills or materials to create a hands-on project. My students love graphic images and a color printer will help them in this endeavor.
Our school is an alternative school in the heart of the inner-city in a building which is over 100 years old.
Students are bussed from all over and come for many reasons: student code of conduct violation or credit recovery. Many are seniors needing anywhere from 3 to 15 credits to graduate. Students who come to our school love the small environment and non-traditional setting. Our students are creative, vibrant and eager to try new things - especially with the arts. Some attend for 45 days and some attend all year. We have a transient student population with diverse needs.
My Project
This will be the first year for a maker workshop and I am gathering supplies from everywhere and everyone. Since this is our pilot year, I am exploring ideas from past activities and many of the successful projects required a color printer and copier. Students enjoy creating and manipulating self-portraits, and while I will use my classroom iPad to take the photos, we can then upload images to manipulate them into other images. Our students love this activity and with our own color printer and copier, they can explore their own creativity with new projects. We use a version of photoshop on our computers and this machine will document their creations.
Our students do not have access to color printers and their creations will now be two dimensional.
I will be collaborating with other teachers in Social Studies and Science and the students will have one more option to improve their learning outcomes. Students can do more than write essays, they can add images, PowerPoints and create brochures. They can now be proud of their work product and see that their imagination is no longer limited by their materials.
