This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help provide my English language learners with spiral notebooks so that they can create interactive notebooks in order to learn science more efficiently.

My students are from a high-needs community in California.

100% of our student population qualifies for free lunch. Most of our students struggle to purchase simple supplies like pens and pencils. They are intelligent, energetic and appreciate what our school provides them academically.

My Project

Over the years I have had my students create a lab journal using a composition notebook. This year my students will create an interactive science notebook which scaffolds learning more efficiently. The notebook becomes a daily resource where they glue in worksheets, take Cornell notes, write reflections, and increase academic vocabulary. In addition, they will color code topics, facts, and evidence. Their notebooks will teach them organization skills and keep them engaged in class. In addition, the notebook will encourage parent involvement with their students progress in science. Most important, students will use this notebook the entire year. They will be able to review material from previous months in order to prepare for assessments.

This is an exciting new tool I am introducing to my students this year.

The lab journals have always be successful, but limited to only investigations. The interactive notebook will not only support the English language learners, but support all students academic development. In the past, my science class has been the fun class where they do experiments and hands-on activities. This year I want to take them even farther, I want to give them skills that they will use years from now.
