Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Grandview Elementary School, located in Rockland County, New York, is home to 450+ K-3 students. In the fall of 2007, we will service seven special education classes, two ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, and two social communications (autistic classes) as well as regular education classes. We are a high-needs district, 90% of our students receive free lunch. During the 2006-07 school years, we set up a listening center in the library media center which allowed up to four children to listen to the same teacher recorded book. The books were selected based on students' ability to comprehend rather than on their ability to decode and read independently. The children listened to both fiction and nonfiction selections which extended and enriched current units of study. Students in each listening group had the opportunity to respond to literature by orally discussing the selections with their peers. The discussions began with student reaction to the selection. Finally, each group focused on teacher developed questions --character, setting, problem, solution, main idea etc. In the 2007-08 school year, with the addition of ten CD Players requested herein, we will be able to accommodate a full class of students working in groups of two to three students. We will record (podcast) student group discussions using mini-digital recorders. Teachers will review the podcasted discussions, share audio highlights with the entire class, and publish podcast book talks in the Grandview Newspaper. By "listening in" teachers will gain valuable information which will direct the development of mini-lessons to address areas of weakness. Finally, with teacher assistance, students will learn to transcribe their podcasts into written reports.
