Collaborative Learning Tables

My Students

Every morning in my classroom, we start with morning meeting where we focus on morning greetings, sharing, and team building activities. Our day continues with Daily 5 and math rotations. All we need now are tables to support our collaborative work environment that we continue throughout the day!

My students are hard workers and are willing to work with others.

It's a close and tight community, as we are a small section school. Each group of students I have will move with each other from class to class unless someone moves. They think of each other as their family. My school is filled with dedicated teachers always looking for ways to improve student learning.

My Project

Students will use the six collaborative tables as a way to interact with each other during all lessons. In math, we tend to spend a majority of our lesson using math talk where students are continuously sharing math ideas and strategies with each other. Students are helping other students at their tables and even working as "helping pairs." During Daily 5 rotations, students will have the opportunity to use the tables as listening centers, work on writing, word work, read with a partner, and read to self. Starting next year, I plan to use guided math as part of my math instruction with my class. As part of guided math, students are working on math rotations with other students or using interactive electronics that pertain to math. With the help of tables, students will be able to work collaboratively with each other. At the moment, single student desks promote a self-centered environment, which I'm trying to stay away from. With the help of others, students will achieve so much more.

As Helen Keller quotes, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." With collaborative tables, it will impact students by thinking of others and sharing ideas.
