My Students

Can you imagine coming from home where even the basic necessities often go lacking? What a relief and comfort it is to arrive in a classroom that is clean, supplied and an inviting place to learn.

In our high poverty urban school, nearly 80% of our students cannot afford food for breakfast or lunch.

In many cases students are without hot water to wash, and most do not have the basic supplies of pencils and paper. Our students turn to the school to provide fundamental personal hygiene materials such as hand sanitizer, paper towels, tissues and band-aids. If these are not available in the classroom, the students go without these basics.

My Project

When a student finds tissues, paper, pens, drinking cups, an air freshened room and clean desktops, the response is to feel welcomed and receptive to learning. These common supplies make all the difference in creating a climate for learning. What's more, the students participate in cleaning and caring for their environment by using sanitizing wipes to clean the desks and paper towels to tidy up the counter tops.

My students write and talk about the violence, chaos and economic challenges they face daily.

They also describe in smiles, hugs and words what it means to be welcomed and cared for in their classroom. With your help in providing basic cleaning and classroom materials, you can create an oasis of calm, orderliness and caring that opens a child's mind and heart to learning.
