My students all speak another language in addition to English, and in our classroom, the goal is to develop academic language in English. We use a lot of visuals and post language that the students need in the classroom, but in order to do this, we need supplies!
Our school is an urban school with a diverse student population.
About 70% of our students come from low-income households and 25% overall are English Language Learners. Almost every student in my class, or their families, have immigrated from other countries (Mexico, Thailand, Laos and many others). The students have the desire to graduate from college, and many of my students will be the first in their families to do so.
My Project
My students need pencils, erasers, markers and chart paper for making classroom posters so they can easily access academic language. Our students will use these resources to create anchor charts that show the academic language that students will need to be successful with content from the grade-level standards. The charts will be posted in the classroom so that students may refer to them when having classroom discussions and when reading and writing. They will develop their academic language skills in English.
These donations will improve our classroom because students will be able to be a part of creating anchor charts that they can later reference for needed language, creating engagement and familiarity with the curriculum.
They will develop a sense of pride from seeing their academic work posted in the classroom and they will feel included as part of a cooperative learning environment.
