6th grade science is full of energy, discovery, research, and collaboration. Student work work to answer large questions that explain the world around them. Being able to see many concepts and teach each other allow for a collaborative classroom environment where true learning can occur.
I feel lucky to work with a wonderful group of 6th graders at a school that encourages social, emotional, and academic growth.
Like many middle schoolers, being social is second nature. They love being involved with their learning and being hands-on. When being in a community that allows them to feel safe and have fun, they show their best learning and growth.
It is especially impressive to see them interact and learn together in such diverse groups, working with many wonderful students with various needs, including English Language Learners (ELL), students with learning disabilities, students with emotional disabilities, and students with cognitive disabilities. They truly are individuals who are going through an important time in their lives, as they are building and discovering how they connect to the world around them.
My Project
Students will use the document camera to make learning in the classroom more collaborative. The document camera will help with visual learners, as it allows all students to see what the class is discussing. Also, students will be able to not only do their work, but they will use the document camera to show and talk about their work. There is more accountability and purpose for the work they are doing. This specific document camera also allows students to show microscope slides that they create, as it also connects to the microscope. This collaboration leads to high level and more quality work and learning.
Engagement is always a goal of all educators.
When students are working individually, in pairs, or in groups, it is more effective to not only have them talk about their work, but show their work. By having a document camera, student will be able to show and talk about their work that they do. It creates more participation, discussion, and collaboration within the classroom.
