Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a class of awesome 5th graders with special needs who are eager to become better readers. Every day I incorporate sustained reading for pleasure into my students class schedule to ensure that they develop an appreciation for literature and to encourage them to read for enjoyment.

50% of my class are English Language Learners and 80% are struggling readers.

My students benefit from a multi-sensory learning environment that taps into different learning styles (i.e. art, movement, technology, etc.). My students have been very vocal about the need for more stimulating books in our classroom library, however I teach in a Title I school and we do not have the budget to purchase books for enjoyment. We also do not have the budget for a school librarian and our school library has not been an environment for optimal student learning for years.

My Project

They will use these materials to: -Practice decoding challenging words. -Develop reading comprehension skills (Example: Determining the meaning of unfamiliar words using picture clues). -Write opinion pieces about their reading. -Develop a familiarity, and hopefully a love for, a genre of literature that students are underexposed to in public schools.

Many of my students are eager to become better readers and have been very vocal about their need for books that are both exciting and on their reading level.

Recently my students became obsessed with a series of graphic novels that was gifted to them by their Physical Education teacher and I realized the potential that graphic novels could have in my classroom. I have always had a love for the genre and believe they will have a huge impact on my students.
