Do you know what it is like to sit through a class and not be able to participate along with your peers? I teach middle school students with learning disabilities who face this challenge every day. "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." (Ignacio Estrada)
Our middle school will have just over 600 students for the 2015-16 school year.
Of those students 74.5% of students are eligible for free/reduced rate lunch. We have a diverse student population, 77.8% of students are of a racial minority and 20.3% are English Language Learners. I teach Modified Language Arts classes and Literacy Intervention classes for students with an IEP or students who need extra support in Literacy. At our school, 16.6% of students qualify for Special Education services (have an Individual Education Plan). The students and staff continue to set goals to reach an established status within the district and state; we are on a mission to be successful!
My Project
My goal is to bring more opportunities for students to learn and improve reading fluency, comprehension skills, and complete written work and projects through the use of technology.
Using Chromebooks in the classroom will allow students access to grade level material that they otherwise cannot read. The acquisition of these Chromebooks will transform the confidence of my students. They will finally be able to discuss the same classroom books that their non-disabled peers read with ease. Using technology on a daily basis will build student confidence. This is crucial for students with disabilities when faced with taking state mandated assessments or completing grade level projects on the computer.
Daily use of technology in my classroom will open a new world to most of my students.
Many do not have access to technology at home causing them to fall further behind.
