My students need these 30 Chromebooks to bring state of the art technology to low income students in rural Kentucky. Three words...virtual field trips!!
Do you remember the first time you saw the ocean, ate in a fancy restaurant, or visited the zoo or a city? For many of the students at my school, these events never have or will happen for them. Their only hope at experiencing things such as this is through technology.
The students in my classroom come from low income homes and 68% of them are on free and reduced lunch.
The attend public school where they receive a hot breakfast and lunch each day. That may or may not be the only food for the day. They travel little and are limited in the local attractions due to being 2 hours from a city of any size. Many do not have computers or Internet service in their homes. They are fascinated by the access we do have to technology.
In addition to being able to access the world through technology, they also enjoy being challenged in reading and math through the means of apps and websites.
The students in my class range in age from 5-7. Many score below the national average and are behind the level of their peers.
They live in a rural area with limited industry and jobs. Many are part of the welfare system,
My Project
The technology being requested will provide equitable access for these students to resources they don't have and places they have never seen. It will give them virtual experiences they may never get otherwise. Funds are very limited in the public school system in our state and this opportunity for 30 Chromebooks at such an amazing price is simply a blessing for our students.
This project is important because with it, each student in the class can have access to a computer.
Without it, they will continue taking turns on the three desktop computers that are outdated.
This will provide immediate intervention for skills that are desperately needed to take these students beyond their current living condition and status.
