My students need all of the basics to raise chickens, such as two each of Feeder Buckets and Lids, two different coops, an incubator and a brooder, in our Agriculture class. STEM meets Career and Technical Education in this amazing hands-on project!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve. That is the motto of the FFA, and what we live by in our STEM / Career and Technical Education class! Caring for animals teaches us much more than just reading about it in a book, so my students are going to raise chickens!
My students live in sunny South Florida, and over 92% receive free or reduced priced lunch!
We are a public school with a magnet program. My students are sweet as can be, but often have limited resources at home. I want to provide for them as much as possible in the classroom.
My Project
My students need all of the basics to raise chickens, such as two each of Feeder Buckets and Lids, two different coops, an incubator and a brooder, in our Agriculture class. STEM meets Career and Technical Education in this amazing hands-on project! We need an incubator to hatch the eggs that will be donated by our local community partners. Then we need a brooder, which is where the chicks grow up nice and warm with plenty of food and water. Lastly, we need a hen house to keep the adults in! This is where they will spend their days, basking in the sunlight in their run, eating worms off the ground. Nights will be spent sleeping in the warm house.
Students will learn by doing...In this case, they will be responsible for the care of another little life! They will also learn where are food comes from - and although they won't be eating the chickens, we will certainly be cooking the eggs! They will also learn about healthy eating and nutrition.
The life skills that will be learned from this project will be remembered - forever!
Every student will remember raising chickens in their classroom - and they will understand the role they play as humane animal caretakers. Since the welfare of the animal depends on them, they have a sense of ownership and responsibility. They will also see that their food comes from these animals, not just from the store!
