This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Chess is fun! Chess teaches children knowledge and life skills while having fun. Chess is a proven method to engage children and motivate them to learn. Our children need this if they are to overcome the challenges they face coming from poverty.

My students live in a high poverty area of our city.

They face extraordinary challenges each day of their lives including the availability of illegal drugs, gang violence, dysfunctional families, and food insecurity. Over 90% of our students are eligible for federal free or reduced lunch. Too often impoverished circumstances lead to impoverished minds. Chess provides them with the chance to enrich their lives through the lessons it can teach in reasoning, patience, planning, sportsmanship, and competition.

My Project

The club has been in existence for 6 years now. Our original sets have broken and missing pieces. I want our students to be the equal of any group against which they may complete during our annual competitions. These good quality sets will help to instill in these young boys and girls a sense of pride. Also knowing that someone out there cares enough to provide them with the best will instill a sense of gratitude that someone out there is rooting for them.

You gift of these sets will provide fun and learning year after year.

The skills they learn will stay with them all of their lives. You will give them the opportunity to meet with and compete with many other children from different backgrounds. They will have an opportunity to burst the narrow confines of their world.
