Changing the World: One Word at a Time

My third graders need class sets of 2 books- Andrew Clement's Frindle and Pam Munoz Ryan's Esperanza Rising!

My Students

Do you remember what your "first" favorite book was? That book that made reading fun for the first time? That book you couldn't put down? That book that made you a life-long reader, someone who no longer viewed reading as a chore? That book that changed your world?

That's an experience that many of my kids have yet to have- and that's an experience that each and every child deserves.

My kids are energetic third graders attending a public Title 1 elementary school in Tennessee and as they're exploring the world around them, they need literature that will change their mindsets, open their eyes to how others think, and shape their own identities as they learn and grow.

My Project

I'd love to jump start my third grader's love of reading with two novels that will excite them to change the world around them (or at the very least, how they view the world)! Frindle is a story about a boy that thought differently than everybody else. He has good ideas in his head, but doesn't know where to put them. His name is Nick Allen and this story is about how he changed the world. Not only is Andrew Clement's Frindle a great selection of literature that will cause readers of all ages to never want to put it down, but it's an inspiring example of how even little kids can change things if they come up with an idea, stick with it and don't let people tell them what they can't do. Esperanza Rising will then follow an inspirational female heroine as she overcomes metaphorical mountains and my third graders will be given the sense that no matter what, we can rise above our problems. Their minds will also be opened to a culture, and way of life, very different from their own!

Both Frindle and Esperanza Raising are phenomenal pieces of literature, with themes and ideas that will give my third graders ideas and experiences that they have yet to encounter.

Quality literature will spark a passion for learning and keep them engaged every hour of every day! Thank you!
