My Students

I want my students to "catch on fire" and learn to love literature. What could be a better way to do it than to offer books on Kindle Fires? These devices will be their future textbooks...let's start now and bring literature circles into the 21st century!

My fifth grade students live in a suburb of a large city in the northwest with U.S.

Army, Navy and Air Force bases nearby. The school is large, with a mixture of students with different economic needs. Our school has experienced difficult financial issues and technology is not being replaced as it ages and falls apart. Almost all of the computers that I earned from a Gates grant are gone and I am working very hard to provide my students with the technology that they need to be successful in the 21st century.

My Project

I am inspired by the idea of using Kindle Fires for literature circles. Using the Kindle is a huge motivator for students. I can purchase a book once and six children can read it on separate devices. The book never gets destroyed, so it can be used again and again in coming years. Students with low vocabulary can easily find the meaning of a word with the Kindle. They can highlight sentences that are important in the text. Group comprehension is enhanced. They can make notes to share in literature circle meetings...all on their Kindle Fire!! For special needs students, the Kindle has text to speech ability and the ability to make the font larger for students with low vision. There is an additional bonus because there are educational games on the Kindle Fire and students can access the Internet to gather information for research projects, enabling six students to work who would not otherwise have had access.

The prospect of having Kindle Fires as part of my curriculum is amazing!

Technology like this is such a motivator for students. I want to enrich the reading experience of special needs children by using the special features that the Kindle Fire offers. Students, as much as we would like them to, do not often stop and look words up in the dictionary. But, with their Kindle Fire, word meanings pop up easily, enhancing their comprehension. The text to speech feature will help struggling readers.
