This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Mrs. Hamaker from Cincinnati OH is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 8 vernier photogates to measure horizontal and vertical initial speed of projectiles and make predictions on where projectiles will land.

Remember George Jetson and the 80's version of the 21st century? Using advanced engineering and math in high school physics programs will get the USA one step closer to that amazing future.
I have 178 students in six classes.
Over 75% receive free and reduced price lunch because they live at such a high level of poverty. Even with these limitations our science department has raised both ACT and graduation test scores every year for the last 4 years. This achievement is due to the dedication of our teachers and they hard working students. Even though they come with life factors that hold them back they refuse to be stuck in the cycle of poverty.
I would like 8 photogates to use with my catapult activity. Students are challenged to build a catapult of their design. Then they test their catapult for consistency as well as maximum distance and height. I would like to add a math component to the challenge by having them use vernier photogates to determine the initial vertical and horizontal velocities as well as release angle of their projectiles and predict mathematically where the projectile will land. They will learn how gravity affects objects with 2 part motion and will analyze their data for the affect of friction of the theoretical results.
In this project students are designing, analyzing, revising, predicting and concluding.
These are the actions of real scientists and engineers working for a USA of the future. I am not telling them what the answer is; I am asking them what is next and letting them discover the answer.
