Capturing Student Interest Through the Microscopic World

My students need good microscopes for observing cheek cells, onion cells, etc and a stereomicroscope for viewing 3D objects.

My Students

My students know that I want them to soar above the rest! Being at a charter school, I have the flexibility to teach at a higher level and having great microscopes will allow this. I once sailed on an ocean core drilling ship and "made" slides of tiny fossils - that can only be observed this way.

Some of my students' families have been able to travel some and experience different parts of the world.

They thirst for more! They love my collections of various things and know how much I love science and share it all with them. Being at a charter school, I am able to go above and beyond the grade level objectives. We don't receive as much federal funding as public school, so I am trying DonorsChoose to receive the microscopes that will excite them!

My Project

Seeing objects through a microscope changes everything. My goal is to always get students excited about whatever we are studying. When these things can be observed through a microscope, it changes their perspective. The microscopes we have (that came with a kit) are plastic, flimsy, hard to focus, and would cause more frustration that they are worth. We have tried! I have all kinds of collections - bugs, rocks, feathers, seashells, etc, and to see them magnified is amazing. I also have microscopic fossils that I "made into slides" when I had the opportunity to sail on an ocean core drilling ship a few years ago, and they have to be observed through a stereomicroscope, therefore, I am requesting one of these so I can share these.

These microscopes will change our whole unit, especially on life science, if they can view their OWN CHEEK CELLS, and compare them to onion skin cells under a microscope!

Our world needs scientists who are excited about making new discoveries and my goal is to get my students excited about science! If you don't capture their attention in elementary grades, there is a good chance, they will lose that interest. I encourage my students to bring in things they find and this addition would add a lot!
