My Students

Do you remember the joy of story time? Getting lost in a good book is a great way for students to appreciate tough, abstract biology concepts. Unfortunately many of our students do not have access to literature. How can students' literacy skills be enhanced without access to literature?

Our high school is located in a small, rural area of NC.

Approximately 80% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Many of our students are not exposed to scientific concepts outside of the academic classroom and do not realize how science is in their everyday life. Our students are good kids who enjoy being challenged; however, without the necessary resources this is not always possible.

My Project

My students are always asking about the science portrayed in different movies. These questions got me interested in using modern literature in my classroom to teach different scientific concepts. Through modern literature, I can engage students and build scientific literacy. Through reading the book "My Sister's Keeper" my students will relate a real life situation to the abstract concept of genetics and genetic engineering. My students will be able to read about scientific concepts outside of the traditional science textbooks. This activity will encourage students to read, analyze, and discuss concepts with their peers. This is an invaluable skill in becoming a globally competitive student in the 21st century.

In order for our students to be globally competitive in the 21st century, our students need to have access to literature with scientific themes.

Students need to realize how applicable science concepts are in their everyday life.
