C2i: Fabulous Fractions For Us

My students need hands-on materials, puzzle, manipulatives and games to learn and clearly understand fractions and fractional parts of a group.

My Students

Fractions are one of the toughest concepts to teach to young children without any visuals for them to learn with. Without these manipulatives, fractions are just another number to them.

My students are faced with the struggle of high poverty.

Some of our students are enrolled in the backpack program that a local church provides because their parents do not have much food at home. I teach 18 third grade students. Their ages range from 8-10 years old. Our school is a Title I public elementary school with about 700 students ranging from grades PreK-6.

My Project

With these fraction materials, my students will be able to work hands-on with ordering and comparing fractions, adding and subtracting like and unlike fractions and simplify fractions. They will also be able to identify equivalent fractions, improper and mixed fractions. The fraction hands-on kit includes enough materials for each of my students to use to learn this difficult concept.

This is my first year teaching third grade and having to teach these fraction concepts.

I have found that my students need these materials to fully understand this concept the best they can. Because it's my first year in this grade and with budget cuts, I do not have these materials for my students. With help from you, my students will be able to use these manipulatives and games to learn fractions and have fun while doing so.
