My students need a hands-on experience learning about caterpillars and their life cycle, and we would like a butterfly habitat to learn about them. How exciting to learn!
My students are just starting to see what school is like. It is important that they love the experience. Part of my goal each year is to excite them about learning. Nothing is more exciting in kindergarten than life cycle studies. With this project, we can give students an amazing study.
I teach in a Title 1 school in middle Georgia.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but they all desire to learn. Sometimes these amazing experiences are difficult for the kids to find here. My five year olds are like sponges. Being a Title 1 school means we are a high poverty school. There is often no money or time for some of the experiences that other children take for granted. Please help these children grow as people and learn because they may not have these same opportunities otherwise.
My Project
Carolina Biological Supply is a fantastic company that has created a butterfly kit that allows students to experience the entire life cycle of the painted lady butterflies and I would love these items to help this unit be unforgettable. This project is dear to my heart. The students are always amazed and awed by the experience of watching the caterpillars grow and change into butterflies. This is one project that is one of my favorite activities because it was wonderful to see the student's faces light up at this learning experience.
This project is so important because as we teach life cycles, we also teach about our own life cycle and what we need to survive.
We tie the study of caring for animals to caring for ourselves. Georgia has a high obesity level and during this unit we discuss healthy eating, food from farms and what living things need to survive. Nothing teaches better than a hands-on experience. Raising live animals is an activity that my students will never forget.
