My students need 12 cups of painted lady butterfly larva, 2 cups of larva food, and 3 mallow plants in order to study the life cycle of a butterfly first-hand.
The life cycle of a butterfly is captivating and magical. A young child gets excited watching their own caterpillar eat, grow, shed skin and repeat the process until finally forming a cocoon. It is unforgettable for them to watch what used to be a fuzzy creature emerge as a beautiful winged insect.
Our classroom is a dynamic, hands-on learning environment where each student's success is top priority.
The 21 inquisitive minds that make up our second grade classroom have a passion for discovering new information. We work hard and want to get the most out of our year together, therefore making meaningful learning a top priority.
My Project
As a part of our state curriculum, we have a unit on the life cycle of butterflies. Although it is easy to pick up a book from the library to read about how caterpillars make a chrysalis and then become a butterfly, it is much more engaging to watch the entire process happen with your very own caterpillar.
Three years ago, my class received a butterfly kit through a DonorsChoose grant. It was a huge success. Not only did my class and other second graders benefit, but most classes from the school came by just to catch a glimpse of the butterflies in each stage. Generous donors like yourself have helped out ever since.
We still have the original butterfly habitat. All we need now are butterfly larvae to put inside and observe!
Our class will have the opportunity to recreate what happens in nature to turn a caterpillar into a butterfly. Students will be with their caterpillar every step of the way, realizing the joys and hardships that caterpillars experience along their life journey.
With your loving support, our classroom will have a life-changing opportunity to enhance our understanding of the life cycle of a butterfly.
Your donation will be providing memories that will ingrain this concept in their minds for years to come. Thank you for supporting our education!
