I teach 5th and 6th grade Math and Science in a charter school. Ninety five percent of our students are African American and 100% of our students are receiving free or reduced lunch.

Many (about 90%) of our students come from either a single parent home or they are placed with other family members (Aunts, grandparents, Uncles, Sisters...)due to situations out of their control. Many of our students lack the social and emotional skills of dealing with adults or their peers due to their living situation. Many of our students are given a lot of responsibilities (IE taking care of themselves, their siblings, their parents)but not the support or guidance and therefore lack the skills to deal with others.

I was able to attend a week-long conference that was based on developing a healthy community, building trust, establishing relationships and commonalities through structured games, greetings, and activities. Simple resources, like hula hoops, bean bags, beach balls, and markers will help me implement the games and activities to build a strong community among the students and teachers at my school.

Your help will ensure that my students are able to develop the skills and habits that they need be productive members of society regardless of their background. We will be able to create a climate that supports the productivity and well being of everyone here and by having a connection to a caring learning community everyone, students and teachers, will be able to help one another learn and grow.
