Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are on a mission to get into college and begin their career journey to be architects, fashion designers, and social workers. However, they need the proper resources that students in high-income neighborhoods receive in order to compete on a similar level.

My students are students of color, from a predominately black and Latino neighborhood in a low-income inner city area of California.

At my charter school, my students who have learning disabilities are fully included in the general education setting, with support from me, their Resource Specialist. These 11th and 12th graders come to my classroom to build skills and are re-taught important concepts that were discussed in their general education classroom. In order to teach to their unique learning styles, they must have a variety of resources and classroom supplies to access the curriculum in differentiated ways. My students are aware of the statics that are set up against them. They know that only 12% of residents from their neighborhood receive their bachelor's degree, while 33% of residents from a more affluent neighborhood just 11 miles away receive their college degrees. My students are fired up and ready to challenge these odds and claim their right to high-quality education.

My Project

Since we are an independent charter school, we have very few resources to allocate to each teacher. I must buy the supplies from my income if I want to provide students with a variety of ways to access the curriculum. I have asked for simple things, liked colored paper and reusable worksheet protectors, to help us use new material to learn lessons that they have already heard, but need to learn it in different ways to fully understand it. I have also asked for chairs and bean bags to provide students with a space to read in our budding classroom library, and also provide students with emotional disturbance a place to calm down. Lastly, I have asked for leveled reading and algebra books to help struggling readers and mathematicians access the rigorous curriculum being taught at our school. These supplies will help my students access the California standards in a unique way that they cannot provide in the general education setting.

Special education students in low-income neighborhoods represent the gap within the gap of the educational system's achievement gap.

Not only are they faced with the lack of resources and opportunities that their community offers them, but they are also struggling against a hidden learning disability. This means that my students are working twice as hard as the general education students to pass their classes and realize their career dreams. Please help my students achieve their dreams.
