Building Minds With Osmo!

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is not like most classrooms. It usually involves swearing, physical aggression and threats. I work with severe behavioral students in grades 1-4. We work hard to get their aggressive behaviors down while still having them learn at their individual grade standards.

In my classroom, there are not very many students because of their aggressive behaviors and for the safety of the students, but we still have four very different grade levels to teach.

All of the students react very well to rewards and reinforcement. In our classroom, we have several rewards systems in place, like level systems, a classroom money system with a store, and small edible reinforcers to help. When you truly get to know each student, you realize that they each bring wonderful diversity to the classroom and to our school. Most of my students come from lower income homes and do not have the opportunity to use technology to help them in their academics. Our school is a Title One K-6 elementary school with three special education support classrooms. We have a Diagnostic Kindergarten, my class with 1st-4th grade and another behavioral support room with 5th-6th grades.

My Project

My students need three Osmo Genius Kits. These Osmo systems would help with differentiated instruction with my students. Not only do we have four different grades that we work with, but we also have the differing levels of the students’ abilities. This system uses graphics while teaching spelling so the students can make mental ties when learning spelling. It also teaches math using great manipulative's and technology so that the students want to be learning. It is also a great program to encourage working in pairs or groups. All of my students need help with social skills and anything that helps promote beings social will help. When my students are heavily involved, their behaviors improve as their minds are occupied. This program can also help them to feel successful and by building small successes, the students realize that they can do well in school.

Donations will help my students to learn that learning STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) is easier than they know and will help intrigue their minds into careers along those subjects.

These students often think that they cannot achieve anything in life. Our goal here is to help them realize that that is not true and they have potential to achieve anything they put their minds to and these Osmos can help them along that path.
