My Students

"A book is like a garden carried in the pocket." -Chinese Proverb Narrowing the gap in early literacy skills will be life-changing for our Kindergarten students. Strong literacy skills are essential in our school and in the real world.

We are a high need, NYC public school in Queens, where nearly 60% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch.

As a successful early childhood school in New York City, we provide a nurturing, yet rigorous community of learning. Our Pre-K through grade 3 students are encouraged to think critically and explore through a hands-on, process-based curriculum. Our commitment to differentiated instruction supports students of all ability levels in every classroom by integrating English Language Learners (ELL students), English as a Second Language (ESL students), Students with Special Needs, and General Education students. Our community is quite international with almost 70% of our students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our students receive extra support for learning English. We also provide communications to parents in 4 home languages [English, Chinese, Spanish, Korean].

My Project

Literacy is integrated into all curriculum areas, including mathematics, science, social studies and the expressive arts. We have requested a variety of tools to help us address the wide range of literacy gap issues for our class including Sight-Word - Journal Books for every student, Sentence Building Kits, Word Family - Picture Wheels, and Sorting Boards. We've also requested new pencils to give our Kindergarten kids fresh tools to inspire their daily learning. These literacy development tools will benefit all of my Kindergarten students, including the English Language Learners. Literacy games are a fun and engaging way for students to build language skills. They are a hands-on way to develop phonemic awareness and rhyming skills, as well as letter sound relationships. Children will get lots of practice with word identification, manipulation of letters, sight words, and reading.

These materials will help to provide extra support to our struggling readers and serve as strong development tools for our ELL students.

Please also know that these books and games will be used for our future students, so your support now will positively impact scores of little lives in years to come!
