Having students recognize the importance of reading in both the classroom and in the real world is invaluable. My students, like Ella and Liz, were stunned to learn of the illiteracy rate in the world and want to help all of their classmates become lifelong readers and, in turn, lifelong learners.
While having an eye-opening class discussion about what classrooms look like around the world, the students were shocked to learn that not all children had access to books. They realized how truly fortunate they are to be in a school where the opportunity to read is so common that it can easily be taken for granted. After looking of pictures of these classrooms, my students brainstormed ways we could emphasize the joys of reading in our own classroom. They decided that having a special place dedicated to reading could be one way to ignite the love of reading for all children and build a sense of community.
Having a reading corner will encourage students to read in a comfortable place, helping them understand that reading for pleasure and for purpose is equally important. When a child struggles with reading, it is difficult to get them excited. Having a safe and quiet place to read alone or with a partner would be the perfect recipe for success.
Because reading is a lifelong skill needed for success in any field, having a place that encourages children to read and work together is invaluable. Our students truly enjoy helping one another be successful and that idea of teamwork really helps us support one another, not only academically, but socially as well. All of the students will benefit from having a quiet space dedicated to reading and learning.
In Their Own Words
Hi. My name is Ella and I am in the 7th grade. Today my class looked at pictures of classrooms from all over the world. I was shocked to see that some classrooms had no books or even furniture. I know I am really lucky to be in a school where books are easy to get. My friend, Liz, and I decided that having a classroom reading space would be a great idea to help us remember to be grateful for all that we have in our school and classroom community.
Our Montessori school focuses on grace and courtesy lessons daily. As a classroom community, we decided to vote on an idea that would make us all feel how special reading can really be. Everyone agreed that having a special place to call their own would make a huge difference. Even kids that don't like reading wanted to have somewhere to relax with a book and a partner. We brainstormed ways to make our dreams come true and wrote persuasive essays to our families to share our ideas.
Liz and I noticed that people in our class and in our school have had trouble with reading and did not enjoy it as much as we do. We want to help them be encouraged to keep reading and to not give up. I think the new books, rug, lamps, & seating choices will only add to our special classroom community. Knowing that we have a special place to read and work will encourage all of us to be thankful for what we have. I hope we can all work together to meet our goal to help us all love reading again.
