Building A Community Through Crafts - Family Craft Night

My students need crafting tools and supplies to support Family Craft Nights. These tools and supplies will be shared with our entire school community.

My Students

Our first family craft event was promoted as a 'bring your own craft tools' event and we are concerned that some of our families declined to attend because they did not have access to the tools needed to complete the projects. Your support of this project will ensure no one feels left out.

Our school is part of a diverse, neighborhood community based in an urban setting.

We currently have approximately 320 K-5 students, including two Special Education classrooms. Our current schedule of family craft nights will coincide with Earth Day and the end of the school year. Our goal is to hold a craft event at least once per quarter, but based on the success of the first event (over 100 participants) we are considering an expansion to once a month. In addition to the two events planned for the end of this year, we are looking forward to a full year of family craft nights during the 2012-2013 session. Because our school is so diverse we're hopeful that this project will connect our students with each other.

My Project

Your support of this project will not only allow students to explore different artistic materials and mediums but also provide time for them to produce work outside of the classroom experience. Unfortunately the school district does not provide some of the specialized tools and materials we are seeking. If our students have access to specialized and unique tools such as crafting scissors, rubber stamps and acrylic paints they will have a chance to thoroughly explore their creativity. They will also have a chance to produce work that combines standard-based requirements, recycling techniques and time spent with families and school peers. Furthermore this project supports every grade-level at our school, as these events are open to the entire student body.

Our hope is regular family craft nights will allow our students an opportunity to spend creative time with their parents, guardians and peers.

We also want these events to strengthen connections within our family community, ultimately leading to a stronger school environment. These events will offer teachable moments for our students to use a variety of artistic techniques to transform mundane, recyclable items into something useful and decorative while coming together as a community!
