Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The day I opened the classroom library, my 3rd graders could not wait to get their hands on the small amount of books I had bought at thrift stores and garage sales. This is a joy to see for any teacher especially reading teachers and to continue this love for books my students need more books.

My students are bilingual students in a 98% Hispanic, low social economic school.

They live in apartment complexes across the street from the school. Some students are fortunate to live with both parents although many are in low income, single parent households. Yet with these obstacles they face early in life my students show the longing to learn new things and to be successful students.

My Project

My students will use these books and tablets during their Drop Everything And Read time. The name of this allotted time describes exactly what happens for those 20 minutes (and any free time available). Students grab their books and choose a place in the classroom to do nothing else but read for 20 minutes. Students will also be able to take the books home so they can read for homework. The tablets will remain in the classroom but will be used to access electronic books available online for students to read and increase their exposure to technology.

Having an abundance of Spanish books in our bilingual classroom library, will have a significant impact on my 3rd grade class.

They will have a variety of books to choose from that will continue to encourage their excitement to read. The tablets will increase their knowledge of technology which unfortunately my students do not have exposure to at home. Most important this generous donation will improve my students fluency and comprehension skills needed to become a successful reader!
