Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine what it feels like to be a kid who has to leave the comfy confines of the Kinder Yard and step foot onto "The Big Yard". "Goodbye" trikes, swings and slides; "Hello" big kids who boss you around just because they have a few years or inches on you: This the dilemma of many First Graders.

My students come from a low-income urban community that is predominantly Latino and Black/African-American.

Many Latinos living in this community are recent immigrants who do not speak much English. People of all color have to work long blue collar hours to support their families. Parents have the difficult challenge of balancing work and meeting their children's social and educational needs. Their challenge is compounded by living in an area where gangs, drugs and violent crime are proportionately high within the city and no doubt affect when and where people should be at certain hours, especially children. Graffiti covers many neighborhood alleys and walls. There is a nearby public library that is not utilized enough. Nearby schools have traditionally had standardized tests scores that are among the lowest in the state. Our school has shown continuous growth the last several years, and improving on the year before has been a constant goal. Our students have been up to the task.

My Project

Our school is located within a 5 mile radius where nearly half of the city's violent crimes occur. Many students are taught survival skills where they must defend themselves physically, which translates in fighting in school. The book 'Bullying in School' will provide valuable lessons for my students. The literature will help students relate to bullies and the bullied at their reading levels. The Nook will provide multimedia access to more books and videos from its vast library and applications. These resources will immediately be used towards a classroom curriculum based on teaching these students about being safe, respectful and responsible citizens. Students will be shown alternatives to dealing with bullies and in the process how to treat one another the way that they would want to be treated. Reading and writing from the selected literature and lessons based around anti-bullying resources will help our students learn to better coexist with one another.

For socioeconomic reasons, the majority of the students in our school have limited access to basic resources such as technology and literature at home.

That should not mean that these children should be as limited while they are in school, but that often appears to be the case with budget cuts happening now and on the horizon in our school district. This project will equip my students with tools that will help them read, but also learn vital social skills that they need to live better lives.
