Bringing STEAM to STEM-Based Learning Through ART!

My students need art supplies such as modeling clay, construction paper, and tissue paper to integrate STEM-based learning in the art room!

This project expired on December 18, 2015.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are ready to add an A for art to STEM and give it STEAM! It is the second year my school has had art, and my students are motivated to learn more in the art room as well as their other studied subjects. The big challenge I have is to give them the resources they need to create and learn.

I teach at an urban K-8 school in Philadelphia.

The school is Title 1, and part of a district suffering from major cutbacks and funding issues. My students all come from low socioeconomic status households and all receive free lunch at school. Due to the districts financial issues, I am not provided a budget for my classroom, and since last year I have spent a lot of my own money and raised other donations as well to help provide art materials and furniture for my classroom. All students, no matter what their background or where they live deserve an equitable chance at education and art education! It breaks my heart that my students enter the classroom at a disadvantage to no fault of their own. These kids are bright, creative, and excited to learn more in the arts. No matter what struggles they face at home, they still wake up and come to school everyday! They are stronger than they know, and deserve so much more than they are handed. My students hold so much promise and potential!

My Project

This project will provide my students with many needed supplies to create art which integrates STEM-based learning. The tissue circles and glue sticks will be used to study the golden ration and to create geometric designs based on their learning. The iPad mounts and tripods will be used to create stop motion films showing metamorphosis and animal habitats. The construction paper will be used to create cut paper designs of animals showing food chains of the animals they choose. The watercolors will be used to explore the properties of color and light as well as experiment with simple chemical reactions on paper. The tin sheets and embossing tools will be used to create animal designs in which the students study the textures and patterns on animals fur/skin. The paper straws will be used to create geometric mobiles inspired by Alexander Calder and mathematics! Lastly, students will study different insects and creatures to create their own crazy creatures using the markers and paper.

Donations to my project will help improve my classroom by putting the materials my students need to integrate STEM learning into their hands.

Having art last year for the first time made a huge impact on my school and students. Helping us to continue creating while integrating what they are learning in their other classrooms will also bring further positive changes to my community by promoting the importance of each subject and displaying how students can learn and design in multiple ways.
