This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am trying to create the next generation of innovators with limited resources. The potential is there, we just need the tools (pun intended) to make it happen!

The students are Pre-AP Algebra I freshman who take my class (Sci-Tech) as their lab.

These students are extremely bright students that need to be given a proper engineering education. Their school is a Title I school located in central Texas. Their low socio-economic status does not always afford them the same opportunities as the students in Science academies around town and I would like to change that.

My Project

This is the first year my high school is offering an engineering course and I've be trying to build a proper engineering lab based in my experiences in undergraduate and graduate education. I hope to gather as many resources as possible since I am essentially starting from scratch. The cutting mats are a one time purchase that will be used throughout the years for projects involving making models and designs from cardboard and foamboard. The process has been slow (I barely got my whiteboards last week!) but I am optimistic that these awesome kids will have a complete lab by the end of the year. I hope engineering inspires these students to continue in a STEM field and use their knowledge of design throughout their academic experience.

If we are to make a nation of innovators, we definitely need more engineering courses in secondary education.

This is often a costly investment, but with a substantial payoff. I hope to inspire minorities (especially women) to continue in engineering and any donations that build my program will definitely help to achieve my goal.
