My Students

I am a self-contained Intensive Learning Center (ILC) teacher in a high poverty elementary school.

I have 8 students with special needs in grades Pre-K through third grade, who are functioning on a Pre-K through early first grade level. My students have disabilities including ADHD, learning disabilities, selective mutism, Autism, hearing impairments, emotionally disturbed, and educable mentally handicapped. Most of my students come from African American or Hispanic cultures.

My Project

I am requesting two Kindles e-readers to help my students learn about other cultures. There are so many little aspects in life that my kids are always questioning...why does she look like that? why is he wearing that? why does he talk like that? My kids have no awareness or understanding of other cultures and how diverse people really are. Through these Kindle readers my students will be able to access a variety of books and apps to help them understand different cultures and people. I am also seeking some art materials so my kids can create themselves using these multi-cultural art supplies and they can be used as a visual to help them understand how and why people are different and develop an understanding and appreciation for other cultures and people.

These resources will help my students understand how diversity and learn about different cultures.

With a variety of books and apps I hope to be able to answer my students questions about people and other cultures while keeping them engaged.
