My Students

Programming robots! What could be cooler? First grade students are not too young to learn programming and robotics. They are at the perfect age for concrete problem solving and learning a basic, logical computer language.

My students are excited and ready to learn.

They love taking on a challenge and working with partners to solve problems. This is what programming is all about. Our school has chosen to invest in technology skills for the 21st century. I am a member of the school technology team. Each of us is working with the technology teacher to pilot different projects this year, so that we can inspire, share and support other teachers at our school as they introduce computer literacy and computer science concepts into their teaching.

My Project

Kids are naturally curious about manipulating the world around them. I want to support these early problem solving skills by allowing them to tackle real problems and find solutions in concrete ways. They will use their programming skills to help the robot find his way out of a maze or move a block from one side of the room to the other. We need Dash and Dot robots so they can see how coding and small group problem solving can change the world around them. Coding helps students see why logical and orderly thinking and communication are important. It also gives them a safe way to try and fail and try again until they succeed.

Instead of shipping our STEM and technology related jobs overseas, we need to prepare today's students to be qualified to fill the jobs America is creating.

Our school wants to make sure that we prepare our students as best we can for our ever changing world. This includes teaching them concrete problem solving skills, computer coding and robotics.
