This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Quality versus quantity is my goal. I want my students to have in depth knowledge about a person that has impacted the world, rather than just skimming the surface.

I teach in a public school in Washington state that has a very high poverty rate.

This year, only 4 of my students speak English as a first language. They do not have many resources to learn about important historical figures. Most of them have never read a biography.

My Project

I want my students to spend a month focusing on one important person that has impacted the world. By providing our classroom with these biographies, you will help my students to choose a person that interests them and read a biography at their reading level. While reading the biography, students will learn how to find the main idea and supporting details within text. They will make personal connections, use compare and contrasting skills, and find cause and effect relationships. As a final project, students will create a presentation to teach their peers about the biography they read.

You will make a difference in many ways when you support this project.

You will provide students with high interest books. You will provide many students with their first biography. You will give students books at their reading level. You will increase student's reading comprehension skills which will be used for a lifetime.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
