Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarten. What do you picture when you hear that word? A room decorated in all things red, yellow, green and blue? Finger paintings drying by the windows? A giant ABC rug laying in the middle of the floor? Our reality is that we have no windows, no bright and colorful rug, no cozy couch.

My students are eager and energetic English Language Learners in an area of low socioeconomic status.

Many have siblings on our campus. We are a dual language program, so they learn in two languages throughout the day. They are eager to please, and delight in learning something new and teaching it to others. I'm blessed to teach them each day!

My Project

Our classroom furniture consists of mismatched tables and chairs, mainly hand-me-downs from other classrooms. My kids come from homes that have been furnished in the same way. Because of this, it's important for me to do what I can to bring shiny and new into their daily lives at school.

Can my students learn to read without primary-colored cushions and cubes?

Sure. I just want to help create for them the fun, happy environment that should be typical of any kindergarten classroom.
