Bridging the Reading Gap

My students need a school collection of leveled book sets for every reading level that can be used during guided reading or literature circles.

My Students

Rebuild our guided reading library! Our building was recently significantly damaged by an EF-5 tornado, and we need to start with a fresh selection of books in our guided reading library.

I teach at a Title I school in southwest Missouri that was damaged by the tornado that tore through our town.

Our building has been considered a total loss, and we will be starting school this August at a temporary location. Many of the students that attend our school were also affected by the tornado. Their homes were partially damaged or completely destroyed by the tornado, and some students lost people they loved and things that they treasured. For many of them, school is an escape from the chaos that goes on at home. Now, more than ever, they need a place to help them return to the normalcy they once knew.

My Project

Reading at school is one way that our students can return to normalcy; however, the majority of them read below grade level. This project will help make it possible for our students to have a better selection of literature to read in small groups to become successful readers. Each grade level will have a set of book sets that are organized by level to choose books that best meet their needs and interests. Our students will be able to bridge the reading gap that may have expanded over the summer due to an abrupt end of the school year, the destruction of their homes, lack of structure, and few if any books to read. This project is not a one time use project. Students will use these leveled book sets to improve their reading skills by reading with their teacher in small guided reading groups or with their peers in literature circles throughout the year. Reading "just right" book sets will allow them to practice fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies without frustration.

This project is one way that our school and those who partner with us can show the families in our community that we are dedicated to providing our students with the very best.

Although we will not be in our old building, we are committed to providing a quality education with quality resources. A new guided reading library will open up a new world for our students.
