Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are eager to engage in new learning opportunities, but due to budget cuts, the small size of our district, federal and state restrictions, district funding does not always stretch as far as it is needed.
The student mathematicians, writers, readers, scientists, artists, musicians, athletes and makers in my small district are inquisitive, hands-on learners that love new opportunities for learning.
As a very diverse district, the majority of the students in my small district (only 2.5 square miles) are English Language Learners and many families are below the poverty line (approximately 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch).
Our very committed and passionate teachers are dedicated to make differentiated learning opportunities as meaningful and relevant as possible so our students not only grow academically, but also gain confidence and build necessary skills such as communicating, collaborating, critical thinking, creativity, and compassion. As the district-wide Librarian/Media Specialist, I am always looking for new avenues for supporting the teacher- and student-learners and design the Libraries/Media Centers as a critical component to the teaching and learning process.
My Project
Let’s breakout of the traditional learning model and make learning fun, meaningful, and engaging! To provide an unique learning opportunity for ALL learners in our district, we would like to have multiple Breakout EDU kits available through the Library/Media Center for classroom use. By providing availability at the district level, we will be able to provide access to many classrooms and also provide different learning opportunities across all grade levels.
Through the use of the Breakout EDU kits and learning model, students will be required to utilize communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity to solve complex clues, riddles, questions, play games, and utilize technology resources that are related to the content and standards they are already learning about in their class.
The Breakout EDU learning model is flexible that once students are familiar with how games are structured and run, they can design their own content games to share with other classrooms!
This will provide unique and sustainable learning experiences that are adaptable, engaging, and help students not only make meaning out of content, but make learning fun!
It helps them to (literally) think outside of the box! Through Breakout EDU activities, students are learning necessary skills to become life-long learners and experience in solving real-life problems.
