My Students

In first grade one of the major obstacles is having to sit still in order to learn to read. But many first graders are not developmentally ready to sit still and still need to get the wiggles out. With the use of the balls, this would enable them to learn as well as have the mobility to wiggle.

Many of our students come from low socio-economical situations, that ball chairs have never been used in any of our classrooms.

I believe they provided a perfect spot for the active bottoms and are ideal for the ADD student or one with processing disorders. Sitting on a ball encourages correct anatomical seating. Balls can assist with focusing and concentration.

My Project

Do you have a first grader that will not sit still? Ever wonder why that student has to wiggle, or tip the chair back? These students have low muscle tone and find the need to sit poorly by placing their heads on their desks or wrapping their feet around the chair. Providing the controlled movement, such as sitting on the ball can actually help a child stay seated and attend to tasks longer. Proper positioning can also promote better posture.

How can you not wonder if reading scores might go up by using an unconventional means of teaching.

All I want to do is try and see if I can change that student who you have to tell 500 hundred times a day to stop tipping his or her chair. A well seated student equals a happier, more productive first grader.
